New Entity to Run BTC, Operations

A new entity is being created to run the Battlefords Tribal Council and all its operations.

 

It’s called the Northwest Territorial Trust.

 

It’s still being organized, and when it’s created, it will not only consist of BTC chiefs and senators, but also people outside First Nations.

 

Those people will include lenders and investors, community leaders in the Battlefords, plus local services and agencies.

 

Spokesman Wayne Semaganis says it will facilitate long-term planning.

 

He says currently, chiefs tend to only plan for the years they’re in power, but BTC wants to plan far beyond that – for 50 years in some cases.

 

Consultant Randy Wallace says another advantage of the structure is to show non-First Nations how complex BTC has become.

 

He says it now operates more than 50 companies, several limited partnerships, and many agencies.

 

Those agencies operate everything from health and education to welfare.
