The Law Foundation of Saskatchewan is funding a new Research Chair in Police Studies at the University of Regina.

Dr. Rick Ruddell will work mainly on Aboriginal policing, gangs, and the operation of justice systems in remote communities.

Ruddell says part of the job will involve practical work with First Nations in the province — including helping reserves that want to establish self-administered police services.

He says he has already gathered some information on policing in remote regions.

Ruddell notes officers in those locations around the country tend to be male, younger than officers at other detachments, and relatively inexperienced.

He adds he hopes to travel to the provine’s north to do some research with the RCMP.
