The elders program within Regina public schools is being called a success.
Aboriginal elders have been working in the Regina Public School system for the past three years.
Aboriginal Education co-ordinator Calvin Racette recently presented an overview of the program to the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.
Racette says the program blends Aboriginal culture with student learning.
He says schools now get a lot more positive reaction from parents, adding the program has created a “different climate” in the schools.
Racette says schools which apply for the elders program must show how they can accommodate the elders, and how it can help families, students and communities.
The program currently has 10 elders working within 31 schools.
