Aboriginal Groups Mark Sombre Anniversary

A day of violence against women was marked and mourned in North Battleford by two Aboriginal groups yesterday.

On December 6th, 1989, Marc Lepine murdered 14 women in a Montreal university.

BTC Indian Health and the Aboriginal arm of Battlefords Victim Services held a ceremony in an inner-city school.

Candles were lit for all women who have been murdered or harmed by violence.

Several girls from the Moosomin First Nation staged a play called “An Aboriginal Youth’s Cry For Help”.

It shows how relationship violence can occur, and what can be done to stop it — or at least how to alert others who can stop it.

Battlefords Tribal Council youth addictions counsellor Jessica Atcheynum says three-quarters of the work she does involves relationship violence.

Atcheynum says it takes victims a while to tell someone they are being abused — but she says she knows the signs and symptoms to look for, and she can usually catch those cues right away.
