The Ahtahkakoop First Nation will soon be offering methadone treatments on reserve.

The First Nation is partnering up with a program out of Prince Albert beginning December 6th.

Ahtahkakoop is making the move so patients don’t have to travel all the way to the city for treatment.

Freda Ahenakew is the director of operations at the band’s Cree Nation Treatment Haven.

She says up to this point patients have been driven in for treatment while others have hitch-hiked on their own:

She says they have about 40 clients on the reserve.

Ahenakew stresses counseling will be provided along with the treatment.

She adds in time they plan to offer the service to neighboring bands as well.
