A historian and researcher from the University of Saskatchewan received the highest honour granted by a federal research funding agency today.

Dr. Jim Miller was awarded the gold medal for achievement in research from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Miller is a leading expert on historical and contemporary issues relating to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal relations.

He has published books on residential schools and treaties.

Miller believes relations would improve if the non-Aboriginal population learned more about the history of Aboriginal people and why there are some problems.

He says there also needs to be a greater investment in education.

Miller has taught at the university for 20 years and is currently the Canada Research Chair in Native-Newcomer Relations.
