Further Proof of Decline in Fur Industry

New numbers from Saskatchewan Environment illustrate how the trapping industry continues to decline.

The government says the province’s trappers set new lows last year for the number of pelts harvested and the total money they received for those pelts.

They marketed 55,000 pelts, down from just over 64,000 the previous season.

Meanwhile, the approximately $1.1 million they received for their harvest was just under the previous record-low they accumulated the year before — but they earned slightly more per pelt last season.

Saskatchewan trappers received just under $3 million for their pelts as recently as three seasons ago.
