The Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism is critical of this week’s Coroner’s Inquest into the freezing death of Kyle Lariviere.
A coroner’s jury ruled late Wedneday that the 19-year-old Beauval man’s death was accidental.
Lariviere escaped from an RCMP vehicle in January 2009, while a police officer got out of the vehicle to unlock a door.
His frozen body was found 40 hours later.
The police officer didn’t notify other officers or supervisors until the family began its own search.
Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism Spokesman Bob Hughes isn’t blaming the officer, but he says it’s not right to call it an accident.
Hughes says procedures need to be developed to make sure a lack of communication like that doesn’t result in another death.
