Highways Minister Invited To Debate Northern Roads

NDP MLA Buckley Belanger has challenged Highways Minister Jim Reiter to a public debate on the state of northern Saskatchewan highways.

Belanger says the current government has ignored the concerns of northerners when it comes to road maintenance.

The Athabasca MLA says the Saskatchewan Party government has had more than enough money and time to get the roads repaired — especially Highway 155.

Reiter says he has been advised the priorities in the north are Highway 155 and the Wollaston Lake road.

He also says his ministry is always very concerned about safety, adding Saskatchewan Highways officials “do the best possible job they can to keep the roads passable.”

However, Reiter says there has to be a balance of road maintenance and new road construction across the province.

Belanger is letting Reiter pick the time and place for a debate, but the minister says the Legislature is the place for debate.
