Training sessions wrap up today for a youth development program at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band called Project Venture.

Organizers say about 260 youth in Hall Lake, Sucker River and La Ronge will participate in the three-and-a-half-year project.

The classroom-based program was started in Native American communities by the National Indian Youth Leadership Project.

Matthew Baker from New Mexico teaches the program and says it has four main components — team-building within the school, after school training in life skills/outdoor living/outdoor survival, weekend outdoor activities with cultural relevance, and 8- to 10-day wilderness trips in the summer.

He says the program is tailored to the various regions of the country.
