It is the end of an era at the Canoe Lake Cree Nation.
Yesterday, voters chose a new chief, Robert Opekokew.
He defeated incumbent Guy Lariviere and five other candidates for chief.
Lariviere has served as chief in Canoe Lake 15 of the past 17 years — including the last decade.
Four of the six councillors elected are also new to council — Eval Lariviere, August Iron, Leonard Iron and Richard Opekokew.
Incumbent councillors Florence Yew and Leonard (Lanoo) Opekokew were re-elected.
A total of 27 candidates ran for the seats on council.
The chief and council will serve a two-year term.
