NWAC Says Bill C-3 Must Pass, Despite Flaws

The Native Women’s Association of Canada is tentatively endorsing a controversial bill in the House of Commons.

Bill C-3 would amend the Indian Act in a bid to get rid of certain clauses deemed discriminatory against First Nations women and children.

Specifically, the clauses inhibit a woman’s ability to pass First Nations citizenship down to her descendants.

At a Senate committee hearing earlier this week, a number of groups opposed the legislation, saying it still discriminates against women in different ways.

NWAC admits Bill C-3 offers only limited changes to the problem.

However, the group says the bill must pass in the interim basis so meaningful change can happen down the road.
