An Aboriginal organization in Prince Albert says the number of homeless people in the community is much higher than most people realize.

Homes for the Homeless is a joint initiative between Jubilation Residential Centres and North Sask River Metis Nation Local 269.

The pilot project began May 1st.

Program Manager Janice Henry says they expected to deal with about 25 families, but in seven months she has worked with about 95 people.

Henry says this initiative has been “a real eye-opener” in terms of the extent of homelessness in the city.

The contract for the pilot project ends March 31st, but Henry says its hoped funding can continue beyond that date.
