A man from Stony Rapids has been sentenced to 27 months in jail for the impaired driving death of another man in La Ronge.

Thirty-year-old Wilbert Mercredi will be heading to the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Today, a judge in Prince Albert sentenced Mercredi on convictions of dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving causing death.

The incident in question occurred on August 27th, 2008.

That’s when Mercredi’s truck collided with one being driven by Larry Urquhart in La Ronge.

Judge R.D. Maher said he felt Mercredi had failed to accept responsibility for the death of Urquhart and that he needed significant structured assistance to become rehabilitated.

Outside the courthouse, Mercredi’s family expressed disappointment with the sentence.

Mercredi’s father, Gilbert Mercredi, says a great injustice has been done to his son.

He claims it was Urquhart who caused the accident.

Gilbert Mercredi told reporters: “I’d say my son is getting the wrong end of the deal here”.

In addition to the sentence, Mercredi is also banned from driving for three years once he gets out.
