A Prince Albert youth convicted of attacking a cab driver with a machete appeared in provincial court today.

The teenage boy, who was 15 at the time of the attack, was handed a 22 month sentence for the assault which left the driver with over one hundred stitches.

Speaking outside the courthouse crown prosecutor Michael Pilon said the youth will begin his sentence at a closed custody facility, likely in Saskatoon or North Battleford.

Pilon says after that the youth could be transferred back to Prince Albert where he would be in open custody.

The crown is unhappy with that open custody provision however and is considering an appeal of the sentence.

Pilon says the main thing is to keep the youth supervised so he doesn’t get exposed to high-risk situations.
