The anniversary of a devastating natural disaster will be marked this weekend on the Kawacatoose First Nation.

Saturday, July 2nd will be the one year anniversary of a tornado that ripped through the the reserve.

No one was killed but 18 homes were destroyed, and more than 80 people were left homeless.

Chief Darin Poorman says his community still suffers some trauma from last year’s event.

Despite this year’s spring thaw and some flooding, Poorman says re-building efforts are underway and on-schedule with 12 homes completed.

Poorman says the band estimates the project costs at $3 million with some support from Aboriginal Affairs and the provincial disaster fund.

The chief adds that a pipe ceremony and feast will be held on Saturday.
