Atleo Says Federal Budget Does Not Deliver

The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations says yesterday’s federal budget doesn’t go far enough in addressing the needs of First Nations.

Shawn Atleo says the government’s financial plan doesn’t include investment for First Nations students.

The budget did contain $30 million for First Nations policing and $22 million to upgrade fuel tanks on reserves.

But Atleo says there is no guarantee of transfers to bands, and annual increases to education funding have been capped at 2% since 1996.

In contrast, he says provinces have funding guarantees that average 6% each year.
