An increase in Shigella bacteria in Saskatchewan has the province’s Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer reminding people that hand washing is the most effective way to combat the person to person illness.

Dr. Saquib Shahab says there have been 13 cases found this year mostly around central Saskatchewan and in Prince Albert.

Shahab says that people with compromised immune systems like children and seniors should be more aware of the symptoms.

Shahab says symptoms also include stomach pain, cramps and fever.

He says three children have been hospitalized for the illness in Prince Albert.
