Big River Saw Mill to Re-Open

Saskatchewan’s lumber industry is getting a big boost.

Premier Brad Wall travelled to Big River this morning where he announced the community would soon have its sawmill back up and running.

The mill closed back in 2006 throwing 200 people out of work.

Now, Carrier Forest Products has stepped forward with plans to establish a sawmill and planer mill.

It is expected to start up in the fall of 2012 and provide jobs to 110 people.

It is also expected to provide a number of spinoff jobs in the harvesting, hauling and reforestation sectors.

Wall says the announcement builds on the momentum the province has seen in the past year and a half with new owners for mills in Carrot River, Hudson Bay and Prince Albert.

Wall says the government has also worked hard to make sure the sawmill has enough wood allocation for it to operate.
