Uranium giant Cameco Corporation is hoping to expand the storage capacity of a tailings management facility at its Key Lake mine and has begun public consultations as part of its environmental assessment.
Currently the TMF holds up to an elevation of 466 metres. Cameco would like to expand up to 510 metres.
Cameco spokesperson Murray Lyons says the company has already met with Pinehouse and the English River First Nation leadership and so far there were no specific environmental concerns raised.
He says there will be more consultations coming up as early as next month.
Lyons says Cameco is hoping to complete the project by about 2015.
The general public can also offer feedback on the project until April 2nd: Cameco has prepared a document outlining environmental assessment issues that is available on the Ministry of Environment’s web site or at communities in the Athabasca region.
