A retired school teacher who now uses literacy as a healing tool in corrections was one of those honoured at an awards ceremony this past weekend in Saskatoon.
June Pedersen won the elders award at Friday’s Saskatchewn Aboriginal Literacy Network gala and awards.
Upon retiring from the separate school system, she began working with men in corrections and getting them to write down their thoughts on paper.
Pedersen says it makes her more connected to the men.
Lac La Ronge Indian Band member Edward Mirasty won the award in the practitioner category, the One Arrow First Nation received the business/organization award, Gail McAdam of the Big River First Nation won in the learner category, and Shayla Tootoosis of the Poundmaker and Little Black Bear First Nations won the inaugural youth award.
