A spokesperson with Aboriginal Affairs says the members of the Cote First Nation will have to reach a consensus if they want to remove their current chief and council.
Rod Desnomie says the office did receive referendum results from members of Cote stating they held a non-confidence vote in their leadership
But Desnomie says according to department rules and a custom band election act, consensus must be reached in the community.
Cote First Nation has over 3000 registered members both on and off reserve.
Chief Norman Whitehawk could not be reached for comment.
