Cumberland House Not Expected To Flood

The swelling banks of the South Saskatchewan River near Cumberland House are the subject of some attention these days.

High water flows at Lake Diefenbaker prompted officials to release water through the Gardiner Dam and into the river.

However, an official with the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority says he doesn’t think it means a flood situation will happen.

Regional manager Dwayne Roulette says water flows are 1,600 – 1,800 cubic metres per second.

Roulette notes during the flood of 2005, that figure was more like 2,500 cubic metres per second.

He explains rainfall in Alberta is the one variable his agency is definitely keeping its eye on.

Roulette adds the water level near Cumberland House is three feet below the height it reached in 2005.
