Delegates attending an elders forum in North Battleford have voted to create a Treaty 6 elders council.

It will advise chiefs and councils on treaty issues.

Elders passed a resolution to that effect on Friday, the last day of the three-day elders forum.

The resolultion calls on chiefs and councillors to appoint representatives to the council from each band.

Band councils will also be responsible for paying expenses for their council representatives.

Little Pine First Nation elder Alex Kennedy wrote the resolution.

Kennedy says there is a real need for this organization because he believes provincial and national Aboriginal organizations don’t represent grassroots First Nations people.

He feels those groups can’t criticize the federal government much because it provides funding to them.

Elders forum co-chair A.J. Felix says plans call for the council to be up and running by May 12th and 13th, the dates for the next gathering, which will be held in Saskatoon.

He says, by then, organizers hope to have suggested names for the new council.
