Over the next few months First Nations across Saskatchewan will be receiving new equipment for fire departments and other emergency services.

The Provincial Public Safety Telecommunications Network is being phased in, and some reserve fire departments already have new radios.

Richard Kent is the Commissioner for Emergency and Protective Services for the Prince Albert Grand Council.

He says INAC has agreed to pay for all the new equipment.

There were 3 First Nations on the old Fleetnet system, and they have now migrated to the new system.

One other band is also on the new system, for a total of 4: Onion Lake Cree Nation, Muskoday First Nation, Red Earth Cree Nation and Keeseekoose first Nation.

Twenty-seven other bands have submitted applications for the new radio equipment.

Kent says with the new system, on-reserve fire fighters will be able to communicate directly with police and ambulance personnel.
