Fishers Hoping To Change Province’s Mind On Plant

Saskatchewan commercial fishers continue to hold out hope that the province will help them financially to build a fish processing plant.
The fishers will need one, as they are set to pull out of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Agreement next year.
However, board member Gordon Stomp says individual fishers don’t have enough money to invest, and the province has said it won’t invest in the industry.
Stomp says the province invests in other sectors, and says it should see that an investment in the plant would be helping more than just the industry. He says the government would be investing in the “social future of northern people”.
He thinks there could be some kind of grant process where the province provides equity to each fisher, who in turn invest in the plant.
Stomp points out there are few options other than welfare if the fishing industry goes under.
