FSIN to Look at Legislative Reform

A task team has been struck by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations to look into legislative renewal of the organization.
Discussion around renewal dominated yesterday afternoon’s session of the FSIN legislative assembly.
George Gordon Chief Glen Pratt said there needs to be more respect, pointing to Tuesday’s discussion about Chief Guy Lonechild’s leadership, saying it was about politics.
Pratt also said there should be accountability and no empty seats in the assembly.
Furthermore, he said he has asked for it in the past, and again raised his concern about involving band councillors in legislative assemblies rather than tribal chiefs.
Sakimay Chief Lynn Acoose agreed with the need for legislative reform and says even more needs to be done.
She said, in hindsight, she wished the resolution on renewal went further, after she saw the disclosure of renumeration for Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority board members, which she called “outrageous.”
Acoose would like to see the Treasury Board set a standard rate for all board renumeration.
She said she will bring that resolution forward at the next Indian Government Commission meeting.
