A new report from the Council of Canadians says the Canadian government is legally bound by international law to provide safe clean drinking water and sanitation to First Nation communities.

The report looks at two United Nation resolutions declaring safe clean drinking water as a human right

Emma Lui is the national water campaigner for the Council of Canadians and says even though Canada abstained from the UN vote First Nation communities can still hold the federal government accountable to international standards.

Lui says the next step is for government to draft a plan of action by properly consulting First Nations and build a suitable framework to implement change.
