The province’s new “Moose on the Loose” campaign is getting a thumbs up from a northern mayor.

Fred McCallum of Green Lake says he supports the idea of telling motorists about the dangers the animals pose in a collision.

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and SGI are making plans to blitz Saskatchewan with messages warning motorists about the animals.

The mayor knows first-hand just how dangerous moose can be.

On July 12th, 1999, he and his wife were driving back to Green Lake when they hit a moose that was running across the road.

McCallum survived, but his wife was killed.

He says he wants people to know how difficult it can be to see the animals, particularly at night.

The government says it’s anxious to reduce the number of collisions involving moose and vehicles because 10 people have died in accidents since 2006.
