Ile-a-la-Crosse Doctor Shortage Focus of Rally

The mayor of Ile a’la Crosse is hoping people show up at a rally on Friday to show support for doctors in the community.

Duane Favel says there are concerns right now that some physicians may leave in July if something isn’t done to bolster recruitment.

Favel says the problem has been brewing for some time.

He says a full complement of doctors at the local health centre is six — but the facility has had less than that during most of its existence.

Favel adds local residents are concerned they won’t have the standard of health care they want and expect.

He says he is hoping the move sparks some meaningful discussions between the village, Northern Medical Services and the Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority.

The rally is set to begin Friday morning outside the community’s health facility.
