Inmates in provincial correctional centres will now have their calls monitored.
Corrections Minister Yogi Huyghebaert says changes to The Correctional Services Act Regulations were approved by provincial cabinet last week and will come into effect tomorrow.
He says officials suspicious of criminal activity during a phone call can now play back and listen to the saved recordings.
Huyghebaert says signage has been in place since June, saying calls are monitored to deter criminal activity.
He says the monitoring system will curb harassment calls from inmates to witnesses and discourage gang activity over the phone.
