A proposed Potash mine in Southern Saskatchewan has caught the attention of the Kawacatoose First Nation.

In a release, the band says it wasn’t consulted over development of BHP Biliton’s Jansen Mine.

Chief Darren Poorman says it is inconceivable that one of the largest potash mines in the world won’t have an impact on First Nations in the area.

He points out the mine is just 55 kilometres away from his community and he’s worried about its impact on water and wildlife.

The band says the province has taken the view that the mine will not impact treaty rights because the project is largely occurring on private lands but Kawacatoose doesn’t agree.
