Some La Loche students are achieving a milestone this week with an experiment they are performing at the world-renowned Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon.

They are the first people to ever look at tree core samples as they look for possible effects from acid rain.

Jontae DesRoches says there are some concerns in the community of how oil sands in neighbouring Alberta are impacting La Loche.

He says Elders have noticed some areas where trees used to grow but aren’t anymore.

Shaedan Klein says acid rain could be detrimental to people’s way of life in La Loche, particularly if fish or wildlife are impacted.

The students are studying their data today and tomorrow they will present their findings.

Next week, some students from Norman Wells, Northwest Territories will be conducting the first-ever synchotron experiments with soils from permafrost.
