Lawsuit Filed Over Death Of Northern Woman

The family of a Saskatchewan woman who died after walking 70 kilometres to get help for a stuck car is suing the Mounties and the Saskatchewan government.

Kerry Canepotatoe, her cousin Melissa Rabbitskin and two children were driving from Prince Albert to Loon Lake on April 8, 2010 when their car got stuck in mud on a remote road.

Rabbitskin called 911 three times, but no one came to help, so the next day, Canepotatoe left the car to walk for help.

The 19-year-old’s body was found a few days later on the side of a road 70 kilometres away.

A statement of claim was filed on Friday at Court of Queen’s Bench in Prince Albert on behalf of Rabbitskin and Canepotatoe’s parents and four siblings.

It alleges that the RCMP was negligent in its handling of the 911 calls and the Saskatchewan Department of Highways did not properly mark the intersection of Highways 942 and 943 to indicate the former was a dead end.
