A 19-year-old man is dead as a result of a fierce storm northwest of Waskesiu Lake early yesterday morning.

RCMP say the victim was with his family, who were sleeping in tents at their trapline near Little Philion Lake when a tornado and hail came through the area around 4:30 a.m.

Most members of the family managed to make it to their truck for protection from the hail and falling trees, but not the victim.

When the family went to look for him, they found him in his tent.

He had been struck by a large tree, which had also hit their truck.

Emergency officials initially couldn’t reach the area because of fallen trees, so a float plane was used.

But the victim died before the float plane arrived. An autopsy is pending.
