A Saskatchewan New Democrat wants a delay in upcoming changes to commercial fish marketing in the province.

Athabasca MLA Buckley Belanger notes the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation will stop buying from Saskatchewan commercial fishers on April 1st.

Belanger says more time is needed to develop an alternative marketing system because a new system of moving product to fish buyers is not in place.

He says a moratorium of one year would give fishers and buyers time to make new arrangements.

Belanger also says nothing has been announced about a new fish processing plant in Saskatchewan.

He says the provincial government has yet to make a financial commitment for the proposed plant, and there has been no word on the issue from either the province or Ottawa.

As well, Belanger says he would like to see a fish plant establish in the province’s north rather than in Prince Albert.
