More Communities Affected by Flooding

The list of communities affected by flooding continues to grow in southern Saskatchewan.

The Ministry of Corrections and Public Safety and Policing is reporting Red Earth, Cumberland House, Daystar, Sakimay, Starblanket, Keeseekoose and White Bear have all requested some type of assistance to prevent or deal with flooding in their community.

Officials at the Cowesses First Nation are hoping for the best as the community is threatened by spring flooding.

About 125 people have been moved away from the reserve until the water level recedes.

Cowesses Chief Grady Lerat says there is the potential for substantial damage.

Lerat says the cooler weather has been a positive factor and slowed the rate of melting over the past few days.

Muskcowpetung is also facing challenges.

Todd Cappo is the Chief and says the hillside snow melt has already forced five families out of their homes.

Cappo says the roads are washed out that more may have to be evacuated because sewage and water trucks no longer have access to homes on the reserve.

Cappo is also expressing concerns about the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority’s plans to release more water from the control structure and further flood his community from the Qu’Appelle River system.
