There was a dramatic rise in advance poll voter turnout in northern Saskatchewan this past weekend compared to the last election.

Elections Canada says 548 more people took advance of advance polls in Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River, compared to the 2008 election.

That’s a 48 per increase, but it’s still 19 per cent less than what was recorded in advance of the 2006 federal vote.

Elections Canada spokesperson Leanne Nyirfa says there were a few other ridings that saw substantial gains, such as Regina-Qu’Appelle and Saskatoon-Wanuskewin.

Across the province, just over 7,000 more people voted in advance polls this time around compared to 2008, a 19 per cent increase.
