The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships are underway at the Jemini Arenas in Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan’s men’s and women’s teams are competing against teams from six other provinces for the right to be called the best in Canada.
The men’s team opened up against the Northwest Territories and won 10-1.
Coach Danny McKay says even though the score says otherwise, the game was close, and he expects the entire tournament to be that way.
The men’s team is trying to defend its title, which it has won the past three years in a row.
The women’s squad opened against Eastern Door and the North in an exciting game that ended in a 4-4 tie.
The women’s coach, Jean Fauchon, says his team has more depth than last year. He is confident in rolling all four lines whereas he says last year there first two were stronger.
He also notes this year Team SK has great goaltending with a goalie from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Tournament Co-Chair Mark Arcand notes the championships almost didn’t happen because nobody was willing to host it.
Arcand says Saskatoon Tribal Council decided to step up and host it.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. The tournament runs until Saturday.
