A national Cree gathering kicks off in Manitoba today.
The Fisher River Cree Nation is hosting the 3-day event.
Around 2,000 people from several different provinces are expected to attend the gathering, which is in its 13th year.
Coordinator Marcella Fountaine says the purpose of the event is to share the language, culture and teachings of the Cree people.
She notes it was started by Saskatchewan resident Alex Ahenakew and intended to unite the Cree across Canada.
She says workshops will take place on a variety of topics including the teachings of Cree women, the environment, drumming, traditional parenting and natural laws.
