The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada has produced a policy statement aimed at educating Aboriginal women about the importance of sexual and reproductive health — as well as educating healthcare providers on cultural differences.

Dr. Sandra de la Ronde, who co-chairs the society’s Aboriginal Health Initiatives Committee, says language and other barriers need to be addressed — such as prejudice and needing access to transportation or childcare.

She says healthcare providers also need to be aware of their body language and things like giving consideration to allowing more people in a delivery room, because in Aboriginal communities, it is often a whole-family celebration sometimes accompanied by ceremony.

The statement includes recommendations for organizations and politicians, as well.
