Northern Highways Raised In Legislature

Athatbasca MLA Buckley Belanger raised the issue of northern highways today in the provincial legislature.
Belanger says much-needed road improvements in areas such as Cumberland House and Patuanak continue to be ignored.
He adds a recently announced highway project — a 10 km stretch north of Beauval — was announced over three years ago under the previous NDP government.
He also renewed calls for a debate on the issue with the Minister of Highways in a northern community.
But Highways Minister Jim Reiter says the appropriate place to debate the subject is in the assembly.
He says because debate in the Legislature is televised and available online, the entire province gets to see it.
Reiter also says $41 million has been spent on northern Saskatchewan highways this year, which is up 7% from last budget.
He adds roads are a large issue across the province and it will take time to catch up on all the necessary repairs and projects.
