The man charged after a death at the Cumberland House Cree Nation has been handed a five-year penitentiary term.

Last November, 26-year-old George Fischer McCauley was arrested after the death of a 43-year-old man on the reserve.

RCMP say the victim was injured in an altercation with another person and pronounced dead a short time later at the local health clinic.

McCauley was originally charged with second-degree murder.

On Tuesday, he entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter in Cumberland House Provincial Court.

McCauley also received a 10-year firearms ban.
