A northern woman says it was the paralyzing effects of a stroke that caused her to begin collecting pennies for people in the Third World.

Almira Bekkatla of St. George’s hill estimates she has gathered more than $60 so far.

The coins are put into vases and then given to the Red Cross.

The stroke happened a few years ago and took the mobility out of her left side.

Bekkatla explains it was because of that event in her life that she began to understand what compassion was all about.

Bekkatla calls each coin she collects a teardrop.

She encourages other people to join her in her cause.
