Pitch Made To Truck Heavy Equipment Across North

The Saskatchewan government says it has had preliminary discussions about a plan to transport heavy equipment for the Alberta oilsands through the province.

The idea was first reported in the Winnipeg Free Press a few days ago.

According to the paper, railway giant Omnitrax wants to ship equipment, built in Asia, to the ocean port in Churchill, Manitoba.

It would then come down by railway to Flin Flon before being trucked across Saskatchewan to northern Alberta.

At least one member of the Manitoba Trucking Association says he’s not certain roadways in northern Saskatchewan would be able to handle the load.

The equipment is said to be extremely heavy and over-sized.

Kirsten Leatherdale speaks for Saskatchewan Highways.

Leatherdale says it’s too early at this point to know how feasible the idea really is.

She adds several players are involved in the proposal.
