The provincial government is moving to ban the import, possession and sale of the northern snakehead fish.

The carnivorous freshwater species comes from eastern Asia and can spread disease in other fish like northern pike and walleye.

It is also believed it could reduce the number of other fish species in lakes and rivers.

The province is asking pet stores not to sell the fish.

Officials say a protocol is being worked on to deal with existing snakeheads in the province.
