Province Wants To Ensure Enough Timber

The provincial government says it wants to make sure a prospective buyer of the Big River sawmill has enough timber supply to make a go of it.

Currently, a company from B.C. owns the rights to the shuttered plant while the government owns 200,000 cubic metres of timber rights in the area.

Bob Ruggles is a deputy minister with the government’s energy and resources department.

He says they’ve been looking at possibly getting more wood for the plant from the Northwest Communities Timber Supply.

That supply is jointly owned by 7 villages and towns in the region.

Ruggles says they want to make sure the sawmill has an adequate supply of logs for when it opens.

Ruggles says he hopes to know more in the coming weeks.
