A northern Saskatchewan highway that has attracted the attention of local and provincial politicians appears to be deteriorating even more.
Cars and vans aren’t being allowed onto Highway 123 between the E.B. Campbell Dam and the village of Cumberland House.
A warning from Saskatchewan Highways says travel is not recommended right now due to the road’s poor condition.
Light Duty, 4×4, ¾-ton and one-ton trucks are being allowed, but motorists are being advised to drive with extreme caution.
Saskatchewan Highways also says anything over a one-ton truck is not being allowed onto the road.
Mayor Andy McKay says the gravel road is constantly facing problems and it needs to be seriously upgraded.
“We need a good base on that highway. Like I said before that road was built in the early 1960’s and I think it’s outlived its lifespan here. I’m hoping that with the recent events here on highway 123 that the government will finally realize that – hey we need to do something with this highway as soon as possible.”
He adds the airport has finally reopened however and air ambulances can land.
The airport had temporarily closed down due to soft spots on its surface.
