Road to Cumberland House Washed Out

It looks like the road to Cumberland House could be out of commission for a while.

Floodwater spilled onto Highway 123 yesterday about 44 kilometres south of the community.

Sask Highways spokesman Doug Wakabayashi says even when the water leaves, they’ll still have to repair the road before vehicles can travel on it.

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority says Cumberland Lake continues to rise and should peak early next week.

However, berms have been put in place to protect both the village and reserve.

Meantime, the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority’s Dale Hjertaas says while flows from the Torch River are falling, the surging Saskatchewan is raising levels on Cumberland Lake.

Flows are also rising at Candle Lake and highway crews have also closed the road from Timber Bay to Highway 165 due to a washout.
