Saskatoon Reportedly Chosen To Host TRC Event

An advisor to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission says Saskatoon will be the site for a major gathering next year.

The TRC has pledged to hold 5 gatherings across the country so survivors can tell their stories.

Statements and testimony from former students of the residential school process will be taken down at that time.

Eugene Arcand of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation says the gathering will likely take place in June of next year.

“So it will probably be a site in or around Saskatoon that can accommodate international travel and everything else.  When?  It will be the third or fourth week in June and I expect that announcement to be made in the next few weeks.”

Arcand says it’s not clear at this point if any travel money will be available to elders who live in the Far North or other isolated communities.
